A field trip, and Student of the Month

I love the Kern County Museum. I love reading the signs in front of all the buildings, and being able to associate them with places I know. The third graders go every year to see the presentation about the Yokuts, one of the Native American tribes from this area. They get to use the mortar and pestle to grind acorns, just like they did way back then. Watching Josh, I have to say, he is lucky he is a boy living now, not a Yokuts girl. He was very precise and methodical in his grinding. It would have taken him quite a while to get enough acorn flour to feed a family.


After the presentation we got to explore. I had a group five rather unruly boys (I guess that's what happens when the teacher has had three of your four children and assumes you can handle it). Basically they ran from place to place, shouting about what they wanted to see next.


Each month the whole school focuses on a different "Pillar of Character" this month was respect. Caleb's teacher chose him, along with two other boys as the students in her class who always show respect. I was too busy taking pictures of his enormous smile to pay attention to what she wrote about him. But I know it was all good of course!
